The battle between French unions and President Nicolas Sarkozy is, among other things, a battle over retirement age. The new president wants to raise the minimum retirement age for public employees to 60. Unions are strong opposed and, in fine French tradition, are on strike.
One fun historical fact on the subject comes from The Wall Street Journal, which reports that French ballerinas can retire at age 40—a perk granted by king Louis the 14th in 1698.
